The Horrors of Fossil Fuels

Updated: Jun 5, 2020

WHAT IS IT?

Fossil fuels are buried deposits of decayed plants and animals turned into crude oil, coal, natural gas, or heavy oils over millions of years. They are non-renewable energy

WHY IS IT A PROBLEM? WHO GETS AFFECTED?

Burning fossil fuels emits carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and carbon monoxide into the atmosphere which creates air pollution. That contributes to global warming, which hurts all animals. Some of the gasses are also very harmful to human health.

WHAT CHARITIES SUPPORT THIS ISSUE?

350.org is a large, worldwide group of people striving to stop global warming. 350 is named after 350 parts per million, the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere for our planet to be safe.

Divestinvest.org is an organization that encourages individuals to divest from fossil fuels and invest in sun and wind energy. They have raised a total of 8.8 trillion dollars!

WHAT COMPANIES ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS?

Fossil fuel power plants generate electricity. Some vehicles burn fossil fuels and some don’t. Ones powered by batteries don’t. Nissan, Honda, and Toyota are the three most popular cars. Rolls-Royce, Lamborghini, and Ferrari are the cars with the least miles per gallon (MPG). This means they go less distance for every gallon of crude oil being burned.

CO2 emissions of an average household are 51% vehicles, 26% appliances, 18% heating and cooling, and 5% waste.

China has the highest carbon dioxide emissions worldwide, with 26.6% of global emissions. The second-highest is the US; with 13.1%. Together, that’s 39.7% and counting! China’s coal-burning is ten times what it was in the 1970s, and North America’s grid-based power systems are 16.125 (16 ⅛) times what Africa’s are.

The total emissions worldwide are 9,138.
